Light: Satsuki Azalea is an outdoor bonsai. It does best in bright outdoor light. During the hottest part of summer, some shade is beneficial, especially in the afternoon. When the tree is in flower, protecting it from strong midday sun and heavy rain can help the blooms last longer.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely, and do not let the tree sit in standing water for long periods. Azaleas are less forgiving of drying out than many other bonsai.
Temperature: Satsuki Azalea is an outdoor tree. Healthy mature trees can tolerate some frost, but they should generally be protected from colder temperatures than about 23°F (although not recommended below 36). Many growers begin winter protection once temperatures drop below about 45°F, then keep the tree in a cool protected range of about 35°F to 40°F during colder periods. This species should not be treated as an indoor bonsai.
Humidity and Airflow: Outdoor conditions suit this species much better than dry indoor air. Good airflow and consistent moisture are important.
Soil: Azaleas prefer acidic soil conditions, which is one reason they are often treated differently than many other bonsai species.
