Chinese Elm Bonsai - Great For The Beginner
The Chinese Elm is Bonsai Outlet’s own World Champion, consistently outselling all the other species we offer (and looking good doing it).
Key takeaways you should be aware of:
- Chinese Elm's are know for losing their leaves. Until it establishes its new home, leaf loss will occur. Could be up to 60-80%.
- Good news is, the leaves will come back.
- The tree you receive will not be identical to the tree you see in the picture. The picture is just a representation and the tree you receive could have a different shape and pot color.
- Recommended soil to use would be the Tinyroots Tropical Soil
IMPORTANT: You want to buy a Chinese elm from a reputable nursery. You should buy all of your Bonsai Trees from a nursery. Roots on a Chinese elm need to be established, and even then, your tree will lose a lot of its leaves as it establishes itself to its new home. Buying a plant with glued rocks from a big box store is not ideal. Those trees are massed produced and rarely survive - they're not generally healthy when you see them in the store.
Chinese Elms are natives of East Asia, and left to its natural form they can grow up to 60ft tall. However, these exquisite trees were seemingly made for The Art of Bonsai.
The Chinese Elm’s canopy is rounded and lush with small, shiny, leathery dark-green leaves that have tiny teeth running alongside each edge. The gorgeous trunk has an incredibly graceful swaying shape that helps it look exactly as Bonsai should ~ a miniature version of an age-old tree.
Aesthetics aside, the Chinese Elm is also a perfect tree for beginners because it’s extraordinarily hardy, it has the unique ability to adapt to an indoor or outdoor environment and its both slow growing & tolerant.
Our Chinese Elm is the quintessential Bonsai and we can’t recommend it highly enough.
A ceramic pot chosen to compliment the Chinese Elm Bonsai is included, color may vary.
*** The Chinese Elm is awesome and you're going to love it, BUT, it will lose it leaves once it is removed from the box upon arrival, so just be prepared for 60-80% leaf loss. Don't worry, they'll come back. They always do. ***
