One-of-a-Kind Deodar Cedar
Japanese Cedar bonsai, also known as Cryptomeria japonica, is a popular coniferous tree species used in bonsai cultivation. Despite its common name, it is not actually a cedar but belongs to the Taxodiaceae family.
Key characteristics of Japanese Cedar bonsai include:
- Appearance: It has a naturally conical habit with thick, red, fibrous bark. The leaves are narrowly wedge-shaped, starting light green and fading to dark green, arranged in spirals around the shoots.
- Varieties: There are several varieties suitable for bonsai, including Elegans, Elegans Compacta, Pyramidata, and dwarf varieties like Elegans nana and Globans nana.
- Growth: Japanese Cedar can grow quite tall in nature, reaching up to 150 feet, but is effectively miniaturized for bonsai cultivation.
Care requirements:
- Position: Needs a light position out of direct sun during summer with good ventilation. Winter protection from frost is necessary.
- Watering: Prefers a damp environment. Adding chopped sphagnum moss to the soil mix and surface can help maintain moisture.
- Feeding: Regular feeding every 2 weeks from spring to autumn, adjusting the nutrient balance throughout the growing season.
- Pruning: Requires continual, regular pinching throughout the growing season to maintain shape and encourage backbudding.
- Styling: Most commonly styled as a formal upright, either with single or multiple trunks. Branches are typically trained horizontally or slightly drooping.
Propagation:
- Can be grown from seed or cuttings, with cuttings rooting easily in late summer or early autumn.
- Japanese Cedar bonsai are valued for their adaptability to bonsai techniques and their attractive foliage, making them a popular choice among bonsai enthusiasts.
