Dawn Redwood - Outdoor Bonsai Tree
This tree is a real blast from the past!
According to the fossil record, the Dawn Redwood has been around for millions of years - as far back as the time of the dinosaurs. For a long time, it was thought to be extinct, until a small grove was discovered in China, in 1944. With this discovery, it has exploded in popularity around the world as a gorgeous decorative plant with a unique history.
The Dawn Redwood also makes for an amazing Bonsai tree. They typically feature a perfectly straight and thin main trunk, with numerous branches leading to fern-like deciduous leaves. Despite coming from China, they are remarkably similar in appearance to Californian Giant Redwoods, making them especially popular among American Bonsai enthusiasts.
They are exceptionally fast-growing, making them great for impatient cultivators. They are also quite hardy. Even though their native habitat is quite damp, they can tolerate dry periods for a while as well. These are trees that need a lot of sun for the best growth, which is why they should be kept outdoors whenever possible. During winter, they will need root protection.
Speaking of winter, be aware that the Dawn Redwood goes dormant in chilly weather. It will lose its leaves, although they do turn a gorgeous yellow bronze before dropping. Do not worry, this is completely normal, and it will come back to life in the spring.
Winter is also when you will want to do your training if you want to modify its appearance. The wires should be left in place at least three months, and six is better, so that you are removing them sometime in the summer. At the same time, you can do your major pruning as well. You want it to have a few months to heal, during the autumn season, before the next dormant period.
That said, redwoods rarely take on a wind-swept look in nature, so allowing it to keep its natural formal or semiformal upright shape is fine. The canopy tends to get a bit messy and overgrown, so that might be your pruning focus - or let it develop untouched, as these trees did for millions of years.
Either way, this is a beautiful bonsai tree and could be a wonderful addition to your yard or garden. With proper care, it will be a treasured living decoration for years to come.
