Ho Yoku Lime Sulfur Jin Seal

A ready-to-use bonsai deadwood whitening solution for Jin and Shari.

Ho Yoku Lime Sulfur Jin Seal is used by bonsai artists to whiten and finish non-living deadwood features on bonsai trees. It is commonly applied to Jin, which are stripped dead branches, and Shari, which are exposed deadwood areas on the trunk.

If you are new to bonsai, this product is not a fertilizer, not a growth supplement, and not something every tree owner needs. Jin Seal is used for styling and finishing deadwood. It helps create the pale, weathered appearance often seen on older bonsai, especially conifers and collected-style trees.

What Are Jin and Shari?

In nature, deadwood can form when branches are damaged by wind, snow, lightning, drought, or age. Over time, the sun and weather bleach the deadwood, giving it a pale, aged appearance.

In bonsai, artists often create or refine deadwood to make a tree look older, more rugged, or more dramatic.

  • Jin: a dead, bark-stripped branch or branch stub
  • Shari: a deadwood feature on the trunk where bark has been removed

Ho Yoku Jin Seal helps create a lighter, sun-bleached look on these non-living wood features.

Best For

  • Jin on dead branches
  • Shari on exposed trunk deadwood
  • Junipers
  • Pines
  • Spruce and other conifers
  • Collected-style bonsai
  • Refining carved or naturally aged deadwood

When Should You Use Jin Seal?

Use Jin Seal after deadwood has been created, cleaned, and allowed to dry appropriately. It is generally used when you want to brighten, whiten, or refresh deadwood on a bonsai tree.

Many bonsai artists apply Jin Seal during warmer, dry weather so the product can dry properly. Apply early in the day when possible, allowing the treated area to dry before evening.

Do You Need This Product?

You only need Jin Seal if your bonsai has deadwood features or if you are intentionally creating Jin or Shari as part of the tree’s design.

If you have a young tropical bonsai, beginner indoor bonsai, or a tree with no deadwood, you probably do not need this product.

Important: Use on Non-Living Wood Only

Ho Yoku Jin Seal should only be applied to deadwood. Do not apply it to live bark, foliage, roots, soil, or green tissue.

This product is for cosmetic bonsai deadwood use only. It is not intended to be used as a pesticide or general plant treatment.

How to Use

  • Shake well before use.
  • Make sure the deadwood area is clean before applying.
  • Dampen the deadwood slightly before application.
  • Use a small paintbrush to apply a thin coat directly to the deadwood.
  • Avoid contact with live bark, foliage, roots, soil, pots, benches, clothing, and skin.
  • Allow the treated area to dry completely.
  • Reapply later if a brighter or refreshed appearance is desired.

The treated area may look yellow at first and lighten as it dries and weathers.

Safety Notes

  • Wear gloves and eye protection when using this product.
  • Use outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area.
  • Do not inhale fumes.
  • Do not swallow.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, clothing, and metal surfaces.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after use.

Lime sulfur products can be irritating and should be handled carefully. Use only as directed and avoid splashing.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
