Tinyroots Hard Premium Akadama Bonsai Soil - Screened and Ready to Use
Tinyroots Hard Premium Akadama is a traditional Japanese bonsai soil aggregate for growers who want a cleaner, ready-to-use Akadama for repotting, top dressing, and custom soil blending.
Akadama is mined in Japan and widely used in bonsai cultivation because of the balance it provides between water retention, drainage, and root development. Many growers use it for deciduous bonsai, conifers, and custom soil recipes. It also darkens when wet, which can help you judge when your tree has been watered.
What Makes This Akadama Different?
We do not simply re-bag imported Akadama. Our Tinyroots Akadama is screened before packing to remove excess dust and very small particles, giving bonsai growers a cleaner, more usable product right out of the pouch.
Because this is a baked product, some additional fines can still develop during shipping and handling. A simple way to think about it is like a baked pizza crust. Even if it leaves the oven intact, a little flaking can still happen during transport. That is normal with baked Akadama and should be expected to some degree.
Important Note About Particle Size
This Akadama is baked to 400 degrees. As a result of the baking process, the particle sizes tend to run a little smaller than some customers expect. If you are comparing it to other Akadama products, especially softer or less processed material, this one may appear slightly tighter in size.
Please keep that in mind when selecting your preferred grade. If you are between sizes or want a coarser feel, choosing the next size up may be the better option.
How to Choose the Right Size
- 1-3 mm: Best for shohin bonsai, smaller pots, smaller root systems, and finer applications
- 3-5 mm: A versatile general-use size for many deciduous and conifer bonsai in small to medium containers
- 5-7 mm: Best for larger bonsai, larger pots, stronger drainage, and growers looking for a coarser particle size
If you are unsure which size to buy: 3-5 mm is often the best starting point for general bonsai use.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
