How It All Started
One of the most common questions I get is, “How did you get involved in the bonsai business?”
It all started in 2001, when my wife gave me a bonsai tree for my birthday. At the time, my green thumb was practically nonexistent, so I had no idea how to care for it. I did not know whether it belonged outdoors, near a window, or tucked into a shady spot. Suddenly, I found myself missing the golf balls and ties I had received in years past.
With a little online research and a single book, I was able to keep that first tree alive. As it turns out, bonsai are not nearly as intimidating as they seem when you have the right information. I am happy to say that first tree is still alive today.
As my confidence grew, I decided it was time to prune the tree properly. Everything I read told me I needed real bonsai tools, so I went online and started shopping. What I found surprised me. Many of the tools and supplies being offered were either too expensive, hard to find, or simply did not feel approachable to someone just getting started.
That was the moment the seed was planted.
I had studied international business in college, so I started reaching out to old friends and contacts to see if I could source quality bonsai tools and supplies at more reasonable prices. The early days were not easy, but little by little, Bonsai Outlet began to take shape. What started with one tree and one question grew into a business built around making bonsai more accessible, less intimidating, and more enjoyable for people across the country.
Over the years, that journey continued to grow in ways I never could have imagined. Along the way, we expanded beyond tools and supplies, added trees, pottery, soils, and educational resources, and welcomed other bonsai businesses and communities into the family. Each step helped shape who we are today.
Most recently, that growth has included bringing together the history, experience, and reputation of New England Bonsai Gardens with Bonsai Outlet. That is an important part of our story. While the name and reach of the business continue to evolve, the heart of it has remained the same: helping people enjoy bonsai, learn with confidence, and have access to quality trees, tools, pottery, and supplies from people who genuinely care.
What began as one bonsai tree on my birthday has grown into something much bigger than I ever expected. But at its core, this business has always been about the same things: curiosity, learning, quality, and a real appreciation for the art of bonsai.
