Bonsai Basics II: Styling & Design (Instructional, Styling-Only)
Ready to level up your skills? Bonsai Basics II is a hands-on, styling-only workshop for beginners who’ve completed Bonsai Basics I (or have equivalent fundamentals). This class takes place in our working nursery, so you’ll learn practical, real-world techniques our team uses every day.
Scope & Expectations
This session focuses on design, pruning, wiring, and light refinement, not repotting, heavy structural cuts, or out-of-season work. You’ll do the work yourself with expert guidance; the instructor will not fully style your tree for you.

What to Expect / Requirements
- Bring your own healthy bonsai (tropical, deciduous, or conifer).
- Cold-hardy species: typically scheduled through April (weather-dependent).
- Tropicals: generally June–October (weather-dependent).
- Bring your own supplies (tools, wire, fertilizer, etc.). The instructor can help you prioritize what you’ll need, if you do not have these items.
- Personalized coaching on design choices, branch selection, pruning, and wiring.
- Small class size ensures plenty of individualized feedback.
- Instructional focus: you’ll build confidence and technique through guided practice.
Seasonal & Species Notes (Important)
- We only perform appropriate techniques at the appropriate time for your species.
- No repotting or aggressive operations in this class.
- Not sure if your tree is ready? Email us beforehand and we’ll help you decide what to work on now vs. later.

- Tools and supplies (bring your own or purchase at the nursery).
- Bonsai tree (bring your own; trees are available for purchase).
- Ceramic pots (available for purchase, if needed). No repotting in this Workshop.
Workshop Details
- Cost: $45 per student
- Duration: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM (Arrive a little early to explore the nursery!)
- Class Size: Limited to 8 students for a more personalized experience
- Location: 914 S. Main Street, Bellingham, MA 02019 (Workshops are held in the greenhouse behind our retail store.)

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
