Bonsai Looks Intimidating. It Doesn’t Have to Be.

Videos can show you what to do. They can’t show you what to do with your tree, in your hands, when something doesn’t look like the tutorial.

Most beginners don’t give up because bonsai is hard. They give up because they were learning alone.

There’s an easier way to start. Spend one session at the nursery with our team beside you, and you’ll leave with a living tree you shaped yourself and the confidence to keep it thriving.

What You Get From One Session at the Nursery

01

Real guidance in real time

Work on your own tree with our team right beside you. Ask anything. Fix mistakes as they happen, not after.

02

Everything included

Your tree, pot, soil, and tools are waiting at your workbench. Just show up.

03

Leave with more than a tree

You’ll go home with a living bonsai you styled yourself, plus the care basics to keep it healthy at home.

Here’s Exactly What Your First Workshop Looks Like

Duration
Plan for about 2 hours, at a relaxed, unhurried pace.

Never touched a bonsai before? That’s exactly who this workshop is for. You’re going to be fine.

  1. 1

    Welcome to the greenhouse

Find your workbench, meet our team, and settle in. Everything you need is already set up.

  2. 2

    Meet your tree

Learn what species you’re working with and what it needs to thrive.

  3. 3

    Pot and style with guidance

Repot, wire, and prune your own tree while our team walks the room the whole time — help is never more than a hand raise away.

  4. 4

    Learn the care basics

Watering, light, and what’s normal in the first few weeks at home.

  5. 5

    Head home with your bonsai

Plus answers to every question you thought of along the way.

All Skill Levels Welcome. We Mean It.

COMPLETE BEGINNERS

Most of our students start here. No experience, no tools, no problem.

RETURNING HOBBYISTS

Already have trees at home? Bring your questions. Our styling and repotting sessions are built for you.

GIFT-GIVERS

A workshop seat is the best kind of bonsai gift: a beautiful tree that comes with the confidence to care for it.

Groups are kept small so everyone gets real attention in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Learn From People Who Do This Every Day

We’re a working bonsai nursery, not a classroom with plants in it. Our team grows, styles, ships, and cares for thousands of living trees across eight greenhouses on our eight-acre nursery.

Our roots go back to New England Bonsai Gardens in Bellingham, MA, family-owned since 1987. Today we’re home to the largest bonsai tree and supply collection on the East Coast, and we’ve helped thousands of people start their first tree.

When you learn here, you’re learning from people who have answered every beginner question imaginable and still love the work.

Questions? Good. We Like Questions.

I’ve never done this before. Will I keep up?

Yes. Bonsai Basics is designed for complete beginners, our team guides every step, and groups stay small. Most students in the room are first-timers too.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. Your tree, pot, soil, and tools are included and waiting at your seat. Just wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little soil on.

How long is a workshop?

Bonsai Basics runs about 2 hours. Our Basics II and Open Workbench sessions run a similar length — exact times are listed on each workshop’s page.

What if my tree struggles at home?

Living trees take a little time to settle in, and some adjustment is normal. You’ll leave with care guidance, and if something ever looks wrong, send us photos. We can help faster when we can see the tree.

Can I buy a workshop as a gift?

Yes. A workshop seat makes a wonderful gift. Purchase a gift certificate and it can be put toward any workshop.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Need to change your date? Just let us know at least 48 hours ahead and we’ll reschedule you.

Where are you located?

914 S. Main Street (Rte. 126), Bellingham, MA 02019, at our nursery. Free parking is available on-site — pull in and check in when you arrive.
