  • A serene close-up photograph of a triple rock cairn, consisting of three smooth, grey river stones stacked in a state of perfect balance. The stack sits upon a textured, light-colored granite surface. The bottom stone is the largest and most substantial, possessing a rounded, dome-like shape. Perched horizontally on top is a medium-sized, egg-shaped stone, which supports the smallest stone—a flattened, oval pebble—at the very top of the arrangement.

Bright, natural sunlight coming from the upper right illuminates the scene, highlighting the fine, speckled mineral texture of the stones and casting soft, gentle shadows on their left sides. The background is a beautifully blurred coastal landscape, featuring a calm blue sea meeting a soft horizon under a clear sky, which enhances the image's overall sense of peace and tranquility. This arrangement of stones, often used in zen gardens and as accents for bonsai, symbolizes mindfulness, harmony, and spiritual balance.

  • A detailed photo of the front cover of the book "Bonsai: A Practical Guide to Aesthetics, Volume 1" by François Jeker. The book is shown in a landscape orientation, resting on a plain, light-brown surface against a stark white background.

The book cover features a high-contrast design with a solid, glossy black background. On the left side, the title is displayed in prominent white lettering. The words "Bonsai" and "Aesthetics" are in a large, bold serif font, with the phrase "A PRACTICAL GUIDE" sandwiched between them in a smaller, semi-transparent white font. Below the main title, the subtitle "How to improve the aesthetic quality of your trees" is printed in a clean, smaller white font. The author's name, "François Jeker," is positioned at the bottom left, and "VOLUME 1" is noted in the top right corner.

The right side of the cover is dominated by a beautifully rendered illustration of a mature bonsai tree in a rectangular, unglazed brown ceramic pot. The tree, likely a juniper or pine, shows characteristics of great age, including a thick, textured trunk with visible "shari" (deadwood on the trunk) and a prominent "jin" (a bleached, deadwood branch) extending to the right. The foliage is depicted as dense, lush pads of needles in varying shades of green and blue-green. This image serves as a professional guide for bonsai enthusiasts and practitioners looking to deepen their understanding of bonsai design and artistic principles.

Contrary to popular belief, Bonsai Gardening isn’t difficult. Some trees are more less difficult than others, but there’s nothing to be intimated by.

We usually respond to this by telling people that it is possible to kill anything, but given that, here are a few helpful facts: If you are just starting out and planning on keeping your bonsai inside most of the time you need a tropical tree. A succulent, like Mini Jade is good to start with. Other good varieties include Arboricola, Brazilian Rain Tree and Chinese elm.

Unfortunately it is impossible to list the symptoms of either in a concise manner.

Very generally speaking, if the roots collapse from lack of water you are likely to see a ‘freeze dried’ look to the leaves or needles. This will happen quite soon after the roots get too dry. Usually within a day or matter of a few days.

Over watering usually takes longer and results in a slower decline but both should be avoided.

Trust your instincts and review your habits, and remember, trees are trees and will grow leaves and drop leaves ( or needles) naturally, so some seasonal dropping of foliage is normal.

No, you will need to transplant it. Usually every one to three years is the norm.
