Pinus thunbergii – Grown by Mark Comstock

We were able to secure just 75 Japanese Black Pine cuttings from Mark Comstock, each now 4 to almost 5 years old. These aren’t ordinary seedlings — they are the result of years of expert cultivation by one of the most respected pine growers in the U.S.

Known for producing trees with world-class root bases, Mark’s pines are highly sought after by collectors and professionals alike.

Unlike seed-grown stock, these double-cut cuttings have had their taproot cut and regrown twice, producing 360° radial root systems with strong nebari potential. This gives you a massive head start in developing show-quality bonsai.

Why These Pines Stand Out

  • Double-cut root work – taproot removed twice, producing incredible fibrous root bases

  • 4–5 years of growth – stronger, thicker, and more developed than typical seedling cuttings

  • Flexible styling potential – cut them down for shohin, twist them up for movement, or grow on for future masterpieces

  • Mark Comstock stock – grown by one of the most respected pine specialists in North America

Next Steps for Development

  • Fall 2025: Needle pluck to refine growth and balance energy

  • Spring 2026: Ready for transition into a ceramic training pot or continue in grow pots for trunk thickening

Tree Features

  • Height: approx. 7–10 inches from soil

  • Arrive in 3.5” plastic grow pots filled with pumice & lava rock

  • Exceptional nebari and strong, healthy growth

Why You Need One

These Japanese Black Pines are crafted pre-bonsai with purpose — not mass-produced seedlings. With their refined roots and careful cultivation, they offer a head start toward developing bonsai with power, elegance, and presence. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this is an opportunity to work with stock that is rarely available outside of Mark’s private batches.
