One-Of-A-Kind Hawaiian Umbrella grown by Jim Smith

We are fortunate to have acquired several remarkable trees from Jim Smith, over the years, including an exquisite Portulacara Afra and a graceful Willow Leaf Ficus.

This Time, were lucky enough to acquire a small group of trees that were started by Jim and further cared for by his son Doug.  We have spent time working these to tighten up the canopies with selective and careful pruning  These are truly special plants linked to one of the fathers of tropical bonsai.

The Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai, also known as Schefflera arboricola, is a captivating and popular bonsai variety with origins in Taiwan. It is beloved for its stunning appearance, ease of care, and its ability to thrive both indoors and outdoors.

The Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai features glossy, dark green leaves that grow in clusters of seven to nine leaflets, resembling tiny umbrellas, hence its name. The foliage creates a delightful, compact canopy that lends an air of elegance to the overall tree structure.

This bonsai variety is appreciated for its adaptability and resilience, making it an ideal choice for beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts alike.

Positioned near a window with bright, indirect sunlight, the Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai thrives indoors. Outdoors, it enjoys partial shade to protect it from intense sunlight.

With its enchanting appearance and ease of care, the Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai is a charming addition to any indoor space or outdoor garden. Its unique umbrella-like leaves and adaptability make it a delightful choice for bonsai enthusiasts seeking a visually appealing and manageable tree.

About Jim Smith:

Speaking of Jim Smith, although I never had the opportunity to meet him personally, I frequented his nursery in Vero Beach, Florida. For those who may be unfamiliar with Jim Smith, he was a globally renowned bonsai artist and one of the founding members of the Treasure Coast Bonsai Society.

Prior to his passing in 2009, Jim was the proud owner of the esteemed Dura-Stone Bonsai Nursery in Vero Beach, FL. Today, the majority of his remarkable trees are housed at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce, FL, as Jim generously donated over 100 trees to the garden.
