Old Dawn Redwood Bonsai with Powerful Base, Mature Bark, and Fresh Spring Foliage
This one-of-a-kind Dawn Redwood bonsai offers the kind of mature character that only comes with time. Estimated at 35+ years old, this tree combines age, bark, movement, and seasonal beauty in a compact, highly displayable size. It has the presence of an older deciduous bonsai, with a sturdy trunk, strong lower base, and a silhouette that already feels established on the bench.
The first thing that draws your eye is the lower trunk and root base. There is real strength here. The base has visual weight, subtle flare, and bark texture that immediately gives the tree a more mature and believable appearance. From there, the trunk rises with natural movement and taper into a compact crown, while the branching begins to build the soft, layered structure that makes Dawn Redwoods so appealing in leaf.
Photographed on March 10, this tree was already flushing nicely and showing the bright green spring foliage that gives the species so much charm. The fresh growth softens the composition and contrasts beautifully with the aged trunk and bark. It is easy to picture how attractive this tree will become as the canopy continues to fill in through the season. For someone who appreciates deciduous bonsai with age and character, this tree offers both immediate appeal and future refinement potential.
The blue glazed Yixing ceramic pot complements the composition well, adding a clean, refined presentation without distracting from the trunk and foliage. Altogether, this is a handsome 35+ year old Dawn Redwood bonsai with mature bark, a powerful base, and the light, fresh energy that makes spring deciduous bonsai so enjoyable.
