Old Dawn Redwood Bonsai with Strong Trunk Line, Broad Canopy, and Blue Glazed Yixing Pot
This one-of-a-kind Dawn Redwood bonsai has a strong, confident image with a trunk line that immediately gives the tree presence. Estimated at 35+ years old, it combines mature bark, sturdy movement, and a wider branch spread that creates a fuller, more substantial silhouette than some of the more narrow trees in this group. It feels established, balanced, and ready to make an impression on the bench.
The trunk is a big part of this tree’s appeal. It rises with good strength from the base and carries that visual weight upward into a convincing deciduous form. The bark texture and subtle movement help reinforce the age of the tree, while the branch structure spreads outward to create a broader canopy and a more expansive image. This gives the bonsai a pleasing balance between trunk strength and canopy width, making it feel both powerful and refined.
Photographed on March 10, this Dawn Redwood was already filling in nicely with fresh spring growth. The emerging foliage softens the stronger structure and adds the seasonal lightness that makes the species so attractive in spring. As the tree continues to leaf out, the canopy should become even more appealing, creating a beautiful contrast between the rugged trunk and the soft, feathery green foliage.
The blue glazed Yixing pot is an excellent complement to the composition. Its color works especially well with the fresh spring growth and adds a brighter, more finished presentation to the overall design. Altogether, this is a handsome 35+ year old Dawn Redwood bonsai with a strong trunk line, broad branch spread, and the kind of seasonal presence that makes it easy to enjoy throughout the growing season.
