Hinoki Cypress ‘Thoweil’ Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Thoweil’

A living sculpture in miniature

The ‘Thoweil’ Hinoki Cypress captures the quiet drama of an ancient forest in the palm of your hand. Its naturally upright form, deep evergreen tone, and patient growth rate make it a favorite among bonsai artists who value balance and control without constant correction. This is one of those trees that seems to “know” how to compose itself.

Elegant structure, minimal shaping

Where many species need frequent pruning to stay true to form, ‘Thoweil’ does most of the work for you. Its narrow, vertical growth habit means shaping is intuitive — a natural fit for bonsai beginners or anyone who prefers refinement over fuss.

  • Compact and upright: Naturally vertical silhouette that resists sprawling

  • Slow growth: Adds just 3–6 inches per year, ideal for long-term shaping projects

  • Rich, deep-green foliage: Dense fan-shaped sprays that stay lush through every season

I’ve seen ‘Thoweil’ maintain its poised, architectural lines through summer heat and winter dormancy alike — it never loses its composure.

Small size, striking presence

Even in a modest pot, this Hinoki becomes a visual anchor. Its foliage carries a quiet sheen, and its compact form draws the eye without shouting for attention. Whether displayed alone or among a bonsai grove, it has that “museum piece” serenity that feels complete on its own.

  • Reaches up to 6 feet in open gardens, smaller in containers

  • Excellent for rock gardens, patios, or fairy landscapes

  • Adds sculptural interest to minimalist or Japanese-inspired settings

Thrives with thoughtful care

Like all Hinokis, consistency is key. Keep its roots evenly moist and shield it from harsh afternoon rays, and it will repay you with decades of refined beauty. The combination of humidity and morning light brings out the best in its glossy green sprays.

  • Water: Keep soil moist; roots are sensitive to drying out

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade — morning sun, afternoon protection

  • Pruning: Only trim green wood; older wood will not bud back

  • Repotting: Every 2–4 years in youth to refresh soil and encourage vigor

I’ve let a Hinoki dry out before — once. Never again. When properly cared for, ‘Thoweil’ rewards patience with unmatched structure and longevity.

A refined evergreen companion

For collectors and newcomers alike, the Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Thoweil’ offers the rare mix of patience, resilience, and poise. It’s an evergreen reminder that beauty can be calm, deliberate, and timeless — a living sculpture that never stops improving with age.
