Seed-Grown Japanese Black Pine Shohin Bonsai by Gerald Rainville (Recently Repotted & Styled by Peter Olson)
This is a seed-grown Japanese Black Pine Shohin with the kind of presence that makes small pines so addictive to collect. The trunk has that rugged, mature texture you only get with time, and the proportions are exactly what you want in Shohin: compact, powerful, and full of future refinement potential. The tree was started from seed in 1987.
Even at this size, the tree reads as “old”. A sturdy base, confident trunk line, and branching that’s already moving in the right direction. It’s the perfect candidate for someone who wants to keep developing a pine the right way: tightening silhouette, building ramification, and pushing the tree forward season after season.
This pine was recently repotted and styled by Peter Olson, so it’s set up to settle in and continue progressing. This is not a project that needs saving, it’s a strong Shohin foundation that’s ready to be enjoyed immediately and refined over time by its next caretaker.
