Handmade Bonsai Pot by Shuho

This handmade oval bonsai pot was acquired at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname during my visit in November 2025. I hand-selected pots directly from what was available on site, not from a catalog.

This is another incredible gem and one of the more special pieces I was able to bring back. It was sitting on the shelf, I picked it up, he put it back, and then later handed it back to me. That moment happened with several pots during the visit, including two pieces from his father that I am keeping for my personal collection. This pot stood out immediately, and it carries that same feeling of importance.

I believe this piece may date to the first generation, though I cannot fully guarantee that attribution - we were exchanging translated iphone messages. What I can say with confidence is that it is an exceptionally special signed pot with real age, character, and collector presence. It feels less like a routine bonsai container and more like a piece that deserves to be owned by someone who truly appreciates Tokoname pottery history.

Visually, the pot has a quiet but powerful presence. The oval form is low and elegant, while the heavily textured surface, bead-like banding, and carved movement around the body give it a distinctly hand-worked character. The finish has an aged, natural tone that enhances the antique feel without becoming distracting. It is a pot that invites a closer look.

  • Condition note: This pot appears old and shows the character, texture, and irregularity that give it its collector appeal.
  • Style: Oval form with a low profile, softly uneven rim, and richly textured hand-worked body.
  • Feet: Multiple small cylindrical feet integrated into the base.
  • Exterior: Unglazed natural clay surface with aged character, bead-like detailing, and strong hand-textured movement.
  • Interior: Unglazed interior with four outer holes and one center drainage hole.

Dimensions:

  • Outside: 10” x 2.5”
  • Inside: 9.25” x 1.75”

Photo Note: Listing photos were taken in natural light. Clay tone and surface character may appear slightly different depending on screen settings and lighting conditions.

Shipping Info: This pot will be carefully packed and fully insured for safe transit.

Meet the Artist

Shuho is part of the long pottery tradition of Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname, Japan. Pieces connected to this kiln reflect generations of bonsai pottery craftsmanship, where function, artistry, and regional character come together in ways that are increasingly hard to find. Visiting the kiln in person gave me the opportunity to select pieces that felt important in hand, and this is one of those pots.
