Handmade Bonsai Pot by Yamafusa (Takehiko Koie)

This handmade oval bonsai pot was made in Tokoname, Japan by Yamafusa (Takehiko Koie). I purchased this pot directly through another artist and guide while in Japan.

This is an elegant, shallow oval with a very clean and balanced silhouette. The soft cream exterior gives it a quiet, almost stone-like presence, while the warm pink interior adds subtle warmth and character when viewed from above. It is restrained in the best way. Nothing flashy, just a very tasteful pot that feels thoughtful and mature.

What makes this piece work so well is its proportion. At only 1.75 inches tall outside, it has the low profile collectors look for when pairing a pot with a refined deciduous tree, flowering tree, or lighter, more graceful composition. The shape helps create a calm presentation, while the softened rim and gentle curve of the wall keep it from feeling flat or mechanical.

This is the kind of pot that does not need ornamentation to feel special. Its appeal comes from proportion, balance, clay tone, and restraint. For someone building a more serious bonsai collection, this is the type of container that earns its place because it will pair beautifully again and again.
