Handmade Bonsai Pot by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka)
This handmade round bonsai pot was made at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka), 5th generation. I visited the kiln in November 2025 and hand-selected pots directly from what was available on site, not from a catalog.
This is one of the most special pots I brought back. In fact, I was reluctant to sell it at all. We purchased only 2 of the 100 successfully made, and I moved one into my personal collection. The other is being offered here because it deserves to end up with someone who will truly appreciate what it is.
The glaze story is remarkable. As it was explained to me through several translated text exchanges while I was trying to better understand it, this metallic surface took 19 years to develop. The success rate is incredibly low, with the kiln producing roughly 1 successful pot for every 10 attempted. Shuho described the effect as something that is still scientifically unexplained, and also said that the potter creates this color with a sense of romance. That combination of mystery, persistence, and artistry is a big part of what makes this piece so compelling. See pictures.
Visually, the pot has a dramatic but restrained presence. The form is a compact round with flared walls and strong sculptural feet, while the glaze carries a deep metallic character with layered movement in bronze, iron, charcoal, and smoky olive tones. It feels rare, intentional, and deeply personal.

Meet the Artist
Shuho, also known as Hidemi Kataoka, is a 5th-generation potter working at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname, Japan. His family kiln is respected for its long pottery tradition and for producing bonsai containers that balance function, craftsmanship, and understated beauty. Visiting the kiln in person gave me the opportunity to select pieces that felt special in hand, each one carrying the character of the workshop and the region.
