Handmade Tokoname Bonsai Pot by Kouji Watanabe
A dramatic tall Tokoname bonsai pot by Kouji Watanabe featuring a bold, hand-carved dragon relief that wraps the body. Finished in unglazed red clay with darkened highlights in the carving, this piece has strong presence and excellent texture, anchored by expressive oni feet that lift the pot with a sculptural, collector-grade feel.

Best For
Ideal for powerful compositions where the container is part of the story, including dramatic shohin junipers, collected-style material, accent plantings with character, or thematic display pieces. The tall profile adds vertical presence and pairs well with rugged bark, shari, and textured foliage pads.
About the Potter and Kiln
This pot was made at Kakuzan Toen in Tokoname, Japan. Kouji Watanabe is the son of Kakuyuki Watanabe (Kakuzan) and manages the kiln. He is also known for his skill in teaching wheel lessons to visitors and fellow bonsai potters, carrying forward the workshop’s tradition through both production and education.
Selection Note
I visited the Kakuzan kiln in November 2025 and hand selected pots in person. This listing may include additional photos from that visit, including the kiln sign and a photo with Mr. Kakuyuki Watanabe.
Photo Note
Photos are taken in consistent lighting to show clay color and carving depth. Minor kiln marks, pinholes, firing variation, or small asymmetries are normal and part of handmade Tokoname work.
