Handmade Bonsai Pot by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka)
This handmade round bonsai pot was made at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname by Shuho (Hidemi Kataoka), 5th generation. I visited the kiln in November 2025 and hand-selected pots directly from what was available on site, not from a catalog.
This piece has a strong flared silhouette with a warm, glossy brown glaze that feels classic and versatile. The surface shows deep chocolate and chestnut tones with subtle variation across the body, giving it a rich finish without overpowering the tree. It has a balanced, practical presence and the kind of understated elegance that works well in many displays.

- Style: Round flared form with a softly rolled rim and balanced tapering body.
- Feet: Integrated scalloped feet formed into the base.
- Exterior: Glossy brown glaze with rich chocolate and chestnut tonal variation.
- Interior: Unglazed interior with one main drainage hole and two wire holes.

Meet the Artist
Shuho, also known as Hidemi Kataoka, is a 5th-generation potter working at Yoshimura Toen in Tokoname, Japan. His family kiln is respected for its long pottery tradition and for producing bonsai containers that balance function, craftsmanship, and understated beauty. Visiting the kiln in person gave me the opportunity to select pieces that felt special in hand, each one carrying the character of the workshop and the region.
