Ho Yoku Hard Premium Akadama for Bonsai Soil - 18L Bag
Ho Yoku Hard Premium Akadama is a traditional Japanese bonsai soil component prized for its balance of moisture retention, drainage, and root development. This is the same akadama used in our smaller bag listings, offered here in a larger 18L bag for customers repotting multiple trees, mixing larger batches of soil, or stocking up during repotting season.
Imported from Japan, akadama is one of the most trusted and widely used aggregates in bonsai soil blending for both deciduous and conifer bonsai. It is especially valued for helping maintain water balance while still allowing air to reach the roots.
Why Bonsai Growers Use Akadama
- Helps balance moisture retention and drainage
- Supports healthy feeder root development
- Improves structure in bonsai soil blends
- Darkens when wet, helping indicate watering status
- Widely used for both deciduous and conifer bonsai
What Makes This Akadama Different?
This hard premium akadama has been heat treated to approximately 400 degrees. Because of that process, the particles tend to run a little smaller than some customers expect compared to other akadama products.
If you are comparing it to softer or less processed akadama, this product may feel slightly tighter in grade. If you are between sizes or prefer a coarser feel, choosing the next size up may be the better option.
Choose the Right Size
- Small: 1-3 mm, best for shohin bonsai, smaller pots, and smaller root systems
- Standard / Medium: 3-5 mm, a versatile general-use size for many deciduous and conifer bonsai
- Large: 5-7 mm, best for larger trees, larger pots, and growers who want a coarser blend with stronger drainage
If you are unsure which size to buy: the 3-5 mm standard grade is usually the safest starting point for general bonsai use.
Important Note About Dust and Fines
Akadama is screened before packing, but because this is a baked product, some fines can still develop during shipping and handling. That is normal and should be expected to some degree.
A simple way to think about it is like a baked crust. Even if it leaves intact, a little flaking can still happen during transport. If you prefer, you can do a quick final sift before use, especially when working with smaller pots or finer soil blends.
Who This Is Best For
- Bonsai growers mixing their own soil blends
- Repotting deciduous and conifer bonsai
- Customers looking for a traditional Japanese aggregate
- Growers who want better control over moisture and drainage
- Collections that require more volume than small retail bags
