Tinyroots Choji Oil Tool Maintenance Kit

If you own carbon steel bonsai tools, this is one of those small maintenance kits that is absolutely worth keeping nearby.

Carbon steel tools are popular because they can take a very sharp edge and feel great in the hand. The tradeoff is that carbon steel needs a little care. If tools are put away wet, left with sap on the blades, or stored in a humid space, rust can start to show up quickly.

The Tinyroots Choji Oil Tool Maintenance Kit gives you a simple way to clean, protect, and refresh your tools after pruning, wiring, repotting, or general bonsai work. A thin coat of oil helps protect carbon steel surfaces from moisture and oxidation, while the included rust eraser helps remove light surface rust before it becomes a bigger problem.

This kit is especially useful for bonsai shears, concave cutters, knob cutters, wire cutters, root cutters, branch cutters, and other carbon steel tools. It is also handy for other carbon steel items around the home, garden, workshop, or kitchen.

Why We Like It

  • Protects carbon steel tools: Helps reduce rust, oxidation, and moisture damage.
  • Great after pruning: Use after cleaning sap, water, or debris from bonsai tools.
  • Includes a rust eraser: Helpful for removing early surface rust before it gets worse.
  • Simple to use: Apply a small amount of oil, wipe, and store your tools clean.
  • Good habit builder: A quick wipe-down after use can help tools last much longer.

Best Uses

  • Carbon steel bonsai shears
  • Concave cutters and knob cutters
  • Branch cutters and root cutters
  • Wire cutters and pliers
  • Garden tools, hand tools, chisels, and knives
  • Removing light surface rust from neglected tools
  • Adding a light protective coat before storage

How to Use

  1. Wipe dirt, sap, and moisture from your tool.
  2. If light rust is present, gently rub the area with the included rust eraser.
  3. Add a small amount of Choji Oil to the lint-free cloth.
  4. Wipe a thin coat over the metal surfaces of the tool.
  5. Store your tools in a dry place.

You do not need much oil. A thin, even coat is enough. The goal is to protect the metal, not leave the tool wet or greasy.

When Should You Use Choji Oil?

  • After pruning sessions
  • After working on sappy trees such as pines or junipers
  • After repotting or root work
  • Before storing tools for the season
  • Anytime your tools have been exposed to moisture
  • When light rust starts to appear

Why Tool Care Matters

Good bonsai tools are an investment. Keeping them clean and lightly oiled helps preserve the cutting edge, protects the steel, and makes the tool more pleasant to use the next time you pick it up.

This is especially important for carbon steel tools. Stainless steel tools are more rust resistant, but carbon steel tools usually need more regular maintenance. A quick wipe with Choji Oil after use can make a big difference over the life of the tool.
