2-Prong Bonsai Root Rake
This 2-prong root rake is for when you need a little more strength during repotting.
Some root balls are easy to work through. Others are dense, compacted, full of old nursery soil, or packed with roots. A light rake may not be enough. That is when a stronger two-prong rake becomes useful.
The two prongs help expose and separate roots while giving you more leverage than a delicate rake/tweezer tool. Use it to start opening up the outer root ball, loosen compacted soil, and create space before moving to finer tools for detail work.
This is not the tool we would use for the most delicate final cleanup. It is more of a practical workhorse for the early stage of repotting, especially when you need to break up tougher soil or separate roots that are matted together.
Many professionals keep a 2-prong rake in their bag because it sits between a gentle root rake and a more aggressive single root hook. It gives you control, but also enough strength to actually move soil and roots when things are tight.
Why We Like It
- More strength than a light rake: Helpful for compacted soil and denser root balls.
- Two-prong design: Separates and exposes roots without being as narrow as a single hook.
- Good leverage: The wooden handle makes it comfortable for heavier repotting work.
- Useful first-stage tool: Great for opening the root ball before detail cleanup.
- Simple and practical: A reliable tool for seasonal repotting work.
Best Uses
- Opening dense root balls
- Loosening compacted bonsai soil
- Working through nursery soil during transplanting
- Separating matted roots
- Early-stage repotting work
- Medium to heavier root work where a light rake is not enough
How to Use
- Start at the outside edge of the root ball.
- Use short, controlled pulls to loosen soil and separate roots.
- Work gradually around the root ball instead of forcing one area.
- Once the root ball is opened up, switch to a lighter rake or tweezers for detail work.
- Be extra careful around fine feeder roots you want to keep.
Do not yank hard through the entire root ball. Use the tool to loosen and separate, not tear everything apart.
Which Root Tool Should I Buy?
- Choose this 2-Prong Root Rake if you need more strength for denser root balls or old compacted soil.
- Choose the Root Rake & Tweezers if you want the most versatile all-around repotting and cleanup tool.
- Choose the Root Rake & Spatula if you want a tool that also helps tamp fresh soil into place.
- Choose the 1-Prong Root Hook if you need a more focused tool for very tight, compacted, or stubborn root work.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
