An Incredible Dawn Redwood Paired with a One-of-a-Kind Jack Hoover Pot
This is not simply a beautiful Dawn Redwood sitting in a beautiful pot. The tree and container work together as one complete composition.
The powerful trunk twists upward from exposed surface roots, turning through areas of rugged bark, natural hollows and weathered wood. Every angle reveals something different. The movement is dramatic without feeling artificial, giving the tree the character of an ancient redwood shaped by time and difficult conditions.
At only 15 inches tall, the trunk feels remarkably substantial. Its broad base and compact height create the proportions of a much larger tree, while the 17-inch spread gives the canopy room to move outward in both directions.
The trunk is the undeniable focal point. Living wood wraps around older sections of the tree, creating strong changes in texture and color. A carved upper section continues the movement of the trunk, while smaller jins and old branch scars contribute to the feeling of age.
The branches are actively wired and positioned for continued refinement. There is plenty of fresh growth available to build a layered canopy, strengthen the silhouette and create carefully placed areas of negative space around the trunk.
Then there is the pot.
This tree is planted in a one-of-a-kind ceramic bonsai pot by Jack Hoover. The low oval form beautifully complements the wide canopy and keeps the composition grounded. Its complex blue-green, gold and earthy brown glaze has tremendous depth, with variations that reveal themselves differently depending on the light and viewing angle.
The warm rim echoes the reddish tones in the trunk, while the blue-green glaze creates a striking contrast with the Dawn Redwood’s bright foliage. It is an artist-made container that could command attention on its own, but paired with this tree it becomes part of something truly special.
Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer, so this composition will change dramatically throughout the year. The soft green foliage will change color and drop in autumn, revealing the twisted trunk and wired branch structure. Fresh foliage returns in spring, transforming the tree again.
This is the kind of bonsai that rewards being viewed from every side. The front emphasizes the broad base and sweeping canopy. Alternate views reveal more of the trunk’s twist, weathered wood and strong directional movement.
The tree still has room to develop, but the elements that make it irreplaceable are already here. You are not waiting for the trunk to gain character, and you will never find another pot exactly like this one.
You will receive the exact Dawn Redwood and one-of-a-kind Jack Hoover ceramic pot shown in the photographs.
