Australian Brush Cherry Bonsai with Open Branching

Due to California agricultural restrictions, this tree cannot be shipped to California. These restrictions are imposed by the State of California and apply to many growers shipping plants from regulated areas.

This is the exact tree shown in the photographs.

This Australian Brush Cherry has an upright trunk, plenty of branches and a much more open structure than the round topiary shape these trees naturally want to develop.

We have been working on it for a couple of years, and Peter Olson recently thinned and styled the tree. He opened the interior, selected the useful branches and started building a more defined canopy. It is not a finished bonsai, but it has a clear direction and plenty of healthy growth to continue working with.

Australian Brush Cherry is a very forgiving tropical species. It grows readily, responds well to pruning and is a good choice for someone developing their first tropical bonsai.

This tree has also made the transition from a nursery container into a 9.5-inch etched Yixing ceramic pot. Brush Cherries develop thick taproots, so this step takes patience and should not be rushed.

Care and Continued Refinement

Australian Brush Cherry appreciates warmth, bright light and regular watering. Grow it outdoors during warm weather and bring it inside before cold temperatures arrive. Indoors, place it in your brightest window or under a suitable grow light. Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness, but do not leave the pot standing in water.

Allow new shoots to extend before trimming them back. Regular pruning will help build finer branching and keep the tree from returning to its naturally dense topiary shape. Check the existing wire regularly and remove it before it begins to mark the branches.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We carefully secure the pot and protect the trunk, branches, foliage and soil before packing it for shipment.

Photography Note

Photographed September 29, 2026. Color and appearance may vary slightly with new growth, pruning, lighting and normal changes in a living tree.

Please Note

Australian Brush Cherry may shed some leaves after shipping or when moved between indoor and outdoor conditions. This is a normal response to an environmental change, and healthy trees generally begin producing new growth once settled.

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final. No refunds, returns or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, its care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out. We’re happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
