The trunk on this Chinese Elm is fantastic. It twists back and forth from the base all the way into the canopy, with several pronounced bends that make the tree look different from every angle. Its taller, narrow shape gives it an especially graceful presence.

The tree measures 12" from the table to the apex and has a 5" spread. It is planted in a 7" glazed Japanese ceramic pot with a warm cream finish. The simple oval pot balances the dramatic trunk without competing for attention.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, with fresh light-green leaves appearing throughout the canopy.

About This Tree

This tree is all about movement. The trunk starts with a solid base, bends sharply in one direction, and then changes course several more times before reaching the top. The curves feel natural and slightly unpredictable, which is exactly what gives the tree so much personality.

The canopy is concentrated toward the top, with smaller branches and foliage appearing along the trunk to help connect the composition. As the tree continues settling in after repotting, the new growth can be allowed to extend before it is trimmed and shaped.

If you want a Chinese Elm with a dramatic trunk but do not have room for a particularly wide tree, this one gives you plenty of visual impact in a compact footprint.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently being grown that way at our Florida nursery. You may keep it tropical, or you can gradually transition it to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do best when allowed to follow the seasons and experience a winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Provide very bright light, using a quality grow light if your indoor natural light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and let it adjust gradually as temperatures cool in fall. In colder climates, including New England, the dormant tree will still need appropriate winter protection for its pot and roots.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Allow excess water to drain freely, and never let the root ball dry out completely.
• After Repotting: Give the tree time to settle in and regain strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its twisting trunk, branches, roots, soil, and Japanese ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves after being boxed and transported. Your tree may arrive with less foliage than shown in the July 20 photographs, and it may drop additional leaves while adjusting to its new home.

This is normal for the species and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it suitable light, water it carefully, and allow it time to settle. Once adjusted, it can begin producing fresh foliage.
