Chinese Elm Bonsai with a Dramatic Trunk and Red Glazed Pot

This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.

We see a lot of Chinese Elms, but every once in a while one comes along with a trunk that makes us stop for a closer look. This tree has a thick upright base, strong surface roots, and a dramatic loop in the middle that gives it a completely different look from the more traditional S-curve elms.

The tree measures 11" from the table to the apex and has a 6" spread. It is planted in a 7" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a warm red finish. The colorful pot is a fun contrast against the pale trunk and fresh green foliage.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, while new foliage was still developing throughout the branches.

About This Tree

The trunk is easily the star here. It begins with several thick roots stretching across the soil, rises into a sturdy base, and then twists into a pronounced loop before dividing into the upper branches. It is unusual, a little quirky, and full of personality.

The branching is open enough that you can still see the trunk clearly, but there is plenty of foliage coming in around it. As the tree continues to recover from repotting, the new growth can be allowed to extend before the canopy is trimmed and refined.

This would be a great choice for someone who wants a Chinese Elm that does not look like every other imported bonsai. The dramatic trunk has already done the hard work of making the tree memorable.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical tree and is currently growing that way at our Florida nursery. You can continue to keep it tropical, or you can gradually transition it to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do best when grown outdoors and allowed to experience a natural winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Give it as much bright light as possible, using a quality grow light if indoor light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust naturally as the weather cools in fall. In cold areas such as New England, a dormant Chinese Elm bonsai will still need protection for its pot and roots during the coldest part of winter.
• Watering: Check the soil regularly and water thoroughly when it begins to approach dryness. Allow the excess water to drain completely.
• After Repotting: Give the tree time to settle in and regain strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its unusual trunk, branches, roots, soil, and glazed ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms are well known for dropping leaves after being boxed and moved. The tree may arrive with less foliage than shown in the July 20 photographs, and a few more leaves may fall while it adjusts to its new surroundings.

This is a normal response for the species and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it good light, water it properly, and allow it time to settle. Once it becomes comfortable in its new environment, it can begin producing fresh growth.
