This Chinese Elm has a bold trunk that refuses to take the easy way up. It rises from a strong root base, turns sharply to one side, and then changes direction again before reaching the canopy. Those angular bends give the tree a rugged personality and make the trunk interesting from every viewing angle.

The tree measures 10" from the table to the apex and has a 5.5" spread. It is planted in a 7.25" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a pale celadon finish. The clean rectangular shape and subtle crackle in the glaze complement the tree without taking attention away from its dramatic trunk.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, with healthy green foliage developing across the upper branches and along the trunk.

About This Tree

The trunk is the first thing you notice. It begins with a broad base, moves forward into a heavy bend, and then turns upward through another curve. The result is a zigzag shape that feels much more rugged than a typical smooth S-curve.

The upper branches are nicely spread out, with plenty of small green leaves and room for additional growth. Once the tree has fully settled after repotting, the new shoots can be allowed to extend before the canopy is trimmed and shaped into a fuller crown.

This is a great choice for someone who enjoys bold trunk movement and wants a Chinese Elm with a little more edge and personality.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently growing that way at our Florida nursery. You may continue growing it as a tropical, or you can gradually transition it to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do best when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Give it very bright light, using a quality grow light if indoor natural light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust naturally as temperatures cool in fall. In colder climates, including New England, the dormant tree will still need suitable winter protection for its pot and roots.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Let excess water drain freely, and do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
• After Repotting: Allow the tree to settle in and regain strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its dramatic trunk, branches, roots, soil, and glazed ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves when they are boxed, transported, and moved into a different environment. Your tree may arrive with less foliage than shown in the July 20 photographs, and additional leaves may fall while it adjusts.

This is normal for Chinese Elms and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it suitable light, water it carefully, and allow it time to settle. Once adjusted, the tree can begin producing fresh growth.
