A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Chinese Elm Bonsai with a Graceful Curved Trunk in a Sunny Yellow Pot

This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.

This little Chinese Elm has such a cheerful personality. Its slender trunk curves gently into a full canopy of small green leaves, while the bright yellow pot adds a fun pop of color. It is an easy tree to picture on a windowsill, plant stand, or bonsai shelf.

The tree measures 9" from the table to the apex and has a 5" spread. It is planted in a 6" glazed Yixing ceramic pot. The rounded yellow pot is a perfect match for the fresh green foliage and gives the entire planting a bright, finished look.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, so it may be even fuller by the time it arrives.

Why We Like This Tree

  • Graceful Trunk: The trunk has a soft curve that gives the tree movement without looking overly formal.
  • Full Green Canopy: It already has a nice amount of foliage and plenty of small leaves to work with as the canopy develops.
  • Fun Yellow Pot: The sunny glazed pot makes this tree feel bright, playful, and different from the usual earth-tone bonsai combinations.
  • Compact Footprint: This is a smaller tree that can fit comfortably into many display areas.
  • Recently Repotted: It is settling into its new pot and growing back nicely in Florida.

About This Tree

What makes this Chinese Elm stand out is the combination of its light, flowing trunk and bright yellow pot. The trunk has a gentle side-to-side curve, with a small lower branch that adds a little extra interest before the eye reaches the rounded canopy.

The top is already leafy and full, with a good network of branches underneath. As the tree continues to grow, the canopy can be trimmed and refined to make it tighter and more defined. For now, we would let it enjoy the warm growing weather and continue settling in after its recent repotting.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported and is currently being grown as a tropical bonsai at our Florida nursery. You can continue growing it this way, but Chinese Elms can also be transitioned to cold-hardy outdoor care.

For our friends in colder areas, including New England, we often find that Chinese Elms do best when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience a proper winter dormancy. The important thing is to choose a growing method and make the transition gradually.

  • Keeping It Tropical: Give the tree plenty of bright light and keep it actively growing during the winter. A bright window may work, but a quality grow light is often helpful indoors.
  • Growing It Cold Hardy: Allow the tree to live outdoors and adjust naturally as temperatures cool in the fall. This gradual change helps it prepare for winter dormancy. Because bonsai roots are less protected than the roots of trees planted in the ground, the pot and root system will still need appropriate winter protection in very cold climates.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Make sure water drains freely from the pot, and do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
  • After Repotting: This tree was recently repotted, so give it time to settle in before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

If you are new to Chinese Elms and are unsure which approach is best for your location, please reach out. We are happy to help you decide whether tropical or cold-hardy care makes the most sense for your climate and setup.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect the bonsai, trunk, branches, soil, and ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves when they are boxed, transported, and moved into

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
