This Chinese Elm has a seriously impressive trunk. It rises from a strong flared base, makes a deep sweeping curve through the middle, and then turns again as it reaches the canopy. The trunk is thick from bottom to top, giving the tree a powerful look without making it feel heavy.

The tree measures 11" from the table to the apex and has a 5.5" spread. It is planted in a 6.5" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a warm neutral finish, an interesting shaped rim, and decorative feet. It is a great pot for this tree and gives the entire planting a more distinctive presentation.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, while new leaves were still filling in around the canopy and along the trunk.

About This Tree

The trunk is what makes this Chinese Elm special. It starts with a solid root flare and rises almost straight before sweeping into a deep curve. A second bend carries the eye upward into the branches, creating plenty of movement in a relatively compact tree.

The open areas between the branches let you see the trunk clearly, while the upper canopy already has a useful framework for continued development. As the tree settles in after repotting and produces more foliage, the new growth can be allowed to extend before it is trimmed into a fuller, more defined crown.

The glazed pot is also worth a closer look. Its rounded shape, gently notched rim, and decorative feet make it much more interesting than a standard bonsai container, while the soft neutral glaze keeps the focus on the tree.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently being grown that way at our Florida nursery. It can remain tropical, or it can be gradually transitioned to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do especially well when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Provide very bright light, using a quality grow light if indoor natural light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust naturally as temperatures cool in fall. In colder climates, including New England, the dormant tree will still need suitable winter protection for its pot and roots.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Let excess water drain freely, and do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
• After Repotting: Give the tree time to settle in and regain strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its dramatic trunk, branches, roots, soil, and decorative ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves after being boxed and moved. Your tree may arrive with fewer leaves than shown in the July 20 photographs, and it may lose additional foliage while adjusting to its new surroundings.

This is normal for the species and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it appropriate light, water it carefully, and allow it time to settle. Once adjusted, it can begin producing fresh growth.
