This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.

This Chinese Elm has a wonderfully twisty trunk that changes direction all the way from the soil to the canopy. Its pale, textured bark makes every curve easy to see, and the open foliage gives you a clear look at the tree's interesting branch structure.

It measures 9" from the table to the apex with a 5" spread. The tree is planted in a 6" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a soft green finish that pairs beautifully with the light-colored trunk.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is still a little sparse, but it is filling in nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026. As the new growth continues, the canopy should become fuller while still showing off that great trunk line.

About This Tree

The trunk is what caught our attention on this one. It starts with a strong curve at the base, swings back in the opposite direction, and finishes beneath an established network of branches. The result is a compact tree with much more movement than you might expect at this size.

The canopy is still filling back in after repotting, so it looks a little open in the photographs. That is not necessarily a bad thing—you can clearly see the branching and get a better sense of how the tree is put together. Once it has regained its fullness, the new growth can be trimmed and shaped to create a more polished canopy.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical tree and is currently growing that way at our Florida nursery. It can remain tropical, or it can be gradually transitioned to cold-hardy care. We often find that Chinese Elms do especially well when they are grown outdoors and allowed to experience a natural winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree actively growing through winter with warmth and plenty of bright light. A quality grow light can be helpful when indoor natural light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and let it adjust gradually as temperatures cool in the fall. In colder regions, including New England, the pot and roots will still need suitable winter protection even after the tree becomes dormant.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Do not let the root ball dry out completely, and always allow excess water to drain.
• After Repotting: Let the tree continue growing and regaining strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.
