A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Below the product name, several key horticultural benefits are listed: "Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply," "Low Risk of Over-Fertilization," "NPK 19-5-9 in Every Granule," and "Improved Root Development."

The right side of the bag is a deep forest green adorned with delicate, light-green line-art illustrations of leaves and branches. A large, clear, crescent-shaped window on this side reveals the actual fertilizer inside: small, uniform, spherical granules in shades of deep indigo and light blue.

At the bottom of the pouch are icons for "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" and a green checkmark indicating the product is "Ready to Use." The weight is listed as Net Wt. 10 oz (280 g). The overall image conveys a high-quality, specialized maintenance product for bonsai enthusiasts.

Chinese Elm Bonsai with a Thick Curved Trunk and Exposed Roots

This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.

This Chinese Elm has a thick, sweeping trunk that gives the tree a lot of character for its size. The trunk curves up from a rugged exposed root base and leads into a compact canopy of small green leaves. It looks great from several angles, and the roots are especially interesting when viewed up close.

The tree measures 10" from the table to the apex and has a 6" spread. It is planted in a 6" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with an earthy finish that works nicely with the trunk and foliage.

This tree was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, so the canopy may be fuller by the time it arrives.

Why We Like This Tree

  • Thick Curved Trunk: The strong trunk movement is easily the best feature of this tree.
  • Exposed Roots: The visible roots give the base a rugged, established look.
  • Compact Size: This is a smaller bonsai that still has plenty of presence.
  • Glazed Yixing Pot: The earthy glazed pot gives the tree a clean, finished presentation.
  • Recently Repotted: The tree is settling in and putting out new growth at our Florida nursery.

About This Tree

This tree is really all about the trunk and roots. The trunk has a bold curve without feeling too formal, and the exposed roots make the base look older and more interesting. It already has a nice framework of branches, and the canopy can continue to be shaped as it fills back in.

Chinese Elms are popular bonsai because they have small leaves, respond well to pruning, and can develop fine branching over time. This one has a strong foundation and should be fun to work with as it continues growing.

Care Notes

This Chinese Elm is currently being grown as a tropical bonsai. Give it plenty of bright light, keep it warm, and protect it from frost and freezing temperatures.

Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness, and make sure excess water can drain from the pot. Since the tree was recently repotted, give it time to settle in before doing any major pruning or root work.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect the bonsai, pot, trunk, branches, roots, and soil during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves after being boxed and moved. The tree may arrive with fewer leaves than shown, and it may lose additional foliage while adjusting to its new home. This is normal for the species and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy.

Once the tree is unpacked, place it in good light, water it properly, and give it a little time to settle in. It can begin pushing fresh growth once it adjusts to its new environment.

Please Note

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
