Compact Desert Rose with Thick Caudex in Glazed Yixing Pot

I picked this Desert Rose up in the fall of 2025 from a grower near Key West, Florida. Desert Rose is not something we normally stock, but every once in a while I come across a plant that is just too interesting to leave behind. This was one of them.

This one is much more compact than the larger specimen we listed, but it has a really nice base. The caudex is thick, squat, and already has exposed roots beginning to give it some character at the soil line. From there, it splits into several trunks, giving you a lot of structure in a relatively small tree.

When we brought it back, it was growing in a standard nursery container. We moved it into a light green glazed Yixing ceramic pot, and I think the combination works really well. The soft color of the pot keeps the focus on that oversized base.

There is still plenty of room to develop this one. You could continue building the canopy, shorten it further, or simply let it grow and enjoy it as-is. I don't pretend we're becoming Desert Rose specialists, but I do think this is a very cool plant for someone who likes unusual tropicals.

Why This One Caught My Attention

The base is really what sold me. For a plant this compact, the caudex is substantial and already has a nice transition into the multiple trunks above it. It looks old and established without taking up much space.

Desert Rose also responds well to pruning, so there is a lot you can do with the structure over time. Personally, I would keep this one relatively compact and continue developing the branching around that oversized base.

Care Notes

Desert Rose likes warmth, strong light, and excellent drainage. The swollen caudex stores water, so it should not be kept constantly wet. Allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings.

This is a tropical plant and must be protected from freezing temperatures. In northern climates, it should be brought indoors well before frost and kept somewhere bright and warm for the winter.

Like most tropical plants, foliage can change depending on temperature, light, season, and shipping. It may also periodically shed leaves and push new growth. The structure, caudex, and ceramic pot shown are the exact plant you will receive.
