Compact Exposed Root Chinese Elm Bonsai in Blue Glazed Yixing Pot
This imported Chinese Elm has a lot of character in a compact size.
The exposed root base is the feature that really makes this tree stand out. The roots rise above the soil, wrap around each other, and then anchor back into the pot. It gives the tree a much more interesting look than a standard Chinese Elm and adds a lot of personality right at the base.
The trunk continues that movement as it rises upward, with a natural twist that carries your eye from the exposed roots into the branch structure. The tree has an open look right now, so you can clearly see the trunk line and branching. As it fills back in, it should give the next owner plenty to work with.
The foliage is lighter from recent pruning, but Chinese Elms are strong growers and respond very well to trimming. With regular care, the branches should continue to fill in and tighten up over time.
It is planted in a 9" blue glazed Yixing ceramic pot. The blue glaze gives the tree a bright, finished look and contrasts nicely with the pale trunk, raised roots, and small green leaves.
Why We Like This Tree
- The exposed roots: Raised roots twist above the soil and give the base a lot of character.
- The compact size: At 14" tall, this tree has strong presence without needing a lot of space.
- The trunk movement: The trunk has a natural bend and twist that works well with the exposed root style.
- The open branch structure: The branching is easy to see and continue developing.
- The pot: The blue glazed Yixing ceramic pot gives the tree a clean, eye-catching presentation.

Care Notes
Chinese Elm is a strong and forgiving bonsai species. It likes bright light and should be watered when the soil begins to dry slightly. Do not let the tree completely dry out.
In warm climates, Chinese Elm can be grown outdoors most or all of the year. In colder areas, it should be protected from freezing temperatures and overwintered appropriately. Regular pruning will help the tree fill back in and continue developing tighter branching over time.
