This Chinese Elm has a quiet elegance that is easy to appreciate. The trunk rises from a wide, interesting root base and moves upward in a series of soft curves. A lower branch creates its own small foliage pad before the trunk continues into the rounded upper canopy.

The tree measures 11" from the table to the apex and has a 7" spread. It is planted in a 7" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a soft celadon-green finish. The simple color and clean shape of the pot are a lovely match for the pale trunk and dark green foliage.

This tree was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, with fresh foliage appearing throughout the canopy.

About This Tree

Everything about this Chinese Elm works together nicely. The exposed root base leads into a slender trunk with smooth, natural movement. About halfway up, a lower branch extends away from the main canopy and gives the tree a more open, layered appearance.

The upper canopy is already taking on a rounded shape, with plenty of smaller branches tucked beneath the foliage. Once the tree has fully settled in after repotting, the new growth can be trimmed to sharpen the silhouette and create even more definition between the branches.

This is a beautiful choice for someone who prefers a bonsai with gentle movement and a natural feeling rather than a heavy or overly dramatic shape.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently growing that way at our Florida nursery. You can keep it tropical, or you can gradually transition it to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do especially well when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing during winter. Provide very bright light, adding a quality grow light if the available indoor light is not strong enough.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust gradually as temperatures cool in fall. In colder areas, including New England, the dormant tree will still need proper winter protection for its pot and roots.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Let excess water drain freely, and do not allow the root ball to become completely dry.
• After Repotting: Allow the tree to settle in and regain strength before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect the trunk, branches, roots, soil, and glazed ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly drop leaves after being boxed and transported. Your tree may arrive with less foliage than shown in the July 20 photographs, and it may shed additional leaves while getting used to its new surroundings.

This is a normal response for Chinese Elms and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it suitable light, water it carefully, and allow it time to adjust. Once settled, the tree can begin producing fresh leaves.
