Exceptional Mature Hydrangea Bonsai with Powerful Trunk in a Sara Rayner Pot

An Incredible Old Hydrangea in a Collectible Sara Rayner Pot

This is the exact tree shown in the photos.

This Hydrangea is absolutely incredible. It has a large, old trunk, exposed roots, and the kind of character you rarely find in this species.

Take a close look at the base. The roots twist around one another and extend across the soil, while the trunk has hollows, old scars, and a lot of natural texture. There is something interesting to see from every angle.

A lot of the branches are wired, and there is plenty of healthy new growth throughout the tree. It is not a finished bonsai, but the trunk and primary structure are already there. The next owner can continue developing the branches and building a more refined canopy.

Hydrangea is grown for its flowers, and seeing this tree in bloom should be something special. It was not flowering when photographed, and I do not know its recent flowering history or exact cultivar. Flower color and bloom timing are not guaranteed. Pruning should be done with the flowering cycle in mind so developing flower buds are not removed unnecessarily.

The tree is planted in a highly collectible 9" hand-built ceramic pot by Sara Rayner. The dark, textured finish and warm rim work very well with the old trunk. The pot is a significant part of this offering and is included with the tree.

Flowering Note

Development Note

This tree has already been wired and worked. The wire should be checked regularly and removed before it begins cutting into the branches. Future pruning can be used to shorten the extensions and continue building a more compact canopy.

Care Note

Hydrangea bonsai should be grown outdoors. Give the tree bright light with some protection from intense afternoon sun during the hottest part of summer. Water thoroughly and do not allow the soil to dry out completely, especially during warm weather.

The tree requires a winter dormancy. Protect the roots and ceramic pot during severe winter weather, particularly from drying winds and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
