Gerald Rainville Grown Kishu Shimpaku Bonsai with Elegant Upright Trunk and Refined Canopy
This is another exceptional Kishu Shimpaku bonsai grown by Gerald Rainville and started in 1986.
The tree has the kind of age, structure, and refinement that only comes from decades of careful bonsai work. The trunk is tall, elegant, and full of character, with mature movement, taper, aged bark, and deadwood features already built into the composition. The branching is well placed, wired, and developed into a balanced canopy with refined pads and strong visual presence.
This is not starter material. This is a serious, long-developed Kishu Shimpaku with the bones of a finished bonsai already in place. It is currently in a mica training pot, but this tree is ready for a ceramic bonsai pot. The right container would immediately elevate the presentation and make the tree feel even more complete.
Kishu Shimpaku is highly desirable for bonsai because of its compact foliage, strong response to refinement, and ability to create tight, elegant foliage pads. Combined with Gerald Rainville’s long-term development, this is a collector-level tree with history, quality, and future potential.
Juniper bonsai are outdoor trees. They need to be grown outside in strong light with good airflow. They are not indoor bonsai.

Care Notes
Kishu Shimpaku bonsai should be kept outdoors year-round. Place the tree in a bright location with strong sun and good airflow. Water thoroughly when needed, then allow the soil to begin drying slightly before watering again. Do not keep this tree indoors.
During winter, Junipers need cold dormancy but should be protected from extreme wind, repeated freeze-thaw stress, and drying conditions. In colder climates, an unheated garage, cold frame, or protected outdoor location is often appropriate during the harshest winter weather.
Shipping Information
This tree ships from our Massachusetts nursery. We pack carefully to protect the tree, pot, foliage, and soil during transit. Some minor soil movement or light shifting can happen during shipping, especially with larger living trees.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final – no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out—we’re happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
