Imported Chinese Elm Bonsai with Exposed Roots and Elegant S-Curve Trunk
This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.
This imported Chinese Elm has a graceful S-curve trunk and a dramatic exposed root base that gives the tree real character. The trunk rises with smooth movement, while the roots spread over the soil with a rugged, aged look that makes the tree feel more established than a standard imported elm.
At 16" tall from table to apex with a 10" spread, this is a compact Chinese Elm with strong visual interest. It is planted in a 10.5" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a turquoise finish, giving the tree a clean, colorful presentation that frames the root base beautifully.
Photographed on June 26, 2026, this tree is a little fuller now than shown. Please note that Chinese Elms often lose a noticeable amount of foliage during shipping. This is common for the species and does not mean the tree is unhealthy; with proper care, it can push new growth after it settles in.
This tree is currently being grown as a tropical Chinese Elm. If it does not sell before fall, Bonsai Outlet may transition it to cold-hardy care. In northern states, we feel Chinese Elms often perform better when grown with winter dormancy, like other deciduous trees.

About This Tree
This Chinese Elm is all about trunk movement and root character. The S-curve gives the tree a familiar traditional bonsai shape, while the exposed root base adds the kind of rugged detail that makes buyers stop and look closer.
The branching is open and ready for continued refinement, and the tree has likely filled in more since the June 26, 2026 photos. Chinese Elms are forgiving, responsive bonsai that can be developed season after season, especially when grown with proper light, pruning, and winter dormancy.
Care Notes
This tree is currently being grown as a tropical Chinese Elm. In warm conditions, it can continue growing actively with strong light and proper watering. In northern states, Bonsai Outlet generally prefers Chinese Elms to be grown cold hardy with winter dormancy, similar to other deciduous bonsai.
If this tree does not sell before fall, we may transition it toward cold-hardy care. Chinese Elms can shed foliage in response to shipping, seasonal changes, or a change in environment. Some leaf drop after transit is normal and expected.
Shipping Confidence
This tree ships from Massachusetts and will be carefully packed to protect the bonsai, pot, trunk, roots, branches, and soil during transit. Please expect some foliage loss during shipping; Chinese Elms commonly drop leaves after being boxed and moved.
Please Note
All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.
We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.
Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
