Japanese Maple Deshojo Pre-Bonsai – Limited Release of 20 Trees

This listing is for one Japanese Maple Deshojo pre-bonsai from the batch shown in the photos.

We are releasing only 20 of these Deshojo Japanese Maples at this time. These are incredible little trees, and we have been holding them back because we are trying to grow them on ourselves. Deshojo is one of the most desirable Japanese Maple varieties for bonsai, best known for its brilliant red spring foliage that gradually transitions as the season progresses.

These trees are not grafted, which is an important detail for bonsai development. Non-grafted Japanese Maples are highly preferred by many bonsai growers because they avoid the visible graft union often seen on landscape-grown maples. That makes these much better candidates for future shohin and small bonsai development.

We cut these back to help control size and encourage compact development. Our goal with this batch has been to grow them toward shohin-size bonsai, but they are still young pre-bonsai and can be developed in different directions. If you prefer a larger tree, you can simply grow it on longer and build size over time.

At this point in the season, it is too late to fully repot and style them aggressively. These are currently growing in small nursery pots and can be slip-potted into a slightly larger container without disturbing the roots. For major root work, wiring, or serious styling, we recommend waiting until the proper season next year.

This is a great opportunity to start with a highly desirable maple variety at a young stage and develop it yourself over time.

Development Notes

These trees are still young and should be treated as pre-bonsai. They have been cut back to help control their size and encourage compact future growth. They can be slip-potted into a larger container if needed, but we recommend avoiding heavy root work or major styling until next year.

Shipping Note

These trees ship in their current 3" square growing pots. Because Japanese Maples are actively growing and the foliage is tender, some minor leaf movement, light leaf bruising, or seasonal changes may occur during shipping. This is normal for young maples in active growth.

Care Note

Japanese Maples prefer morning sun with afternoon shade, especially during hot weather. Protect from strong wind, intense afternoon sun, and drying out. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. These are outdoor trees and should not be grown indoors.
