A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Below the product name, several key horticultural benefits are listed: "Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply," "Low Risk of Over-Fertilization," "NPK 19-5-9 in Every Granule," and "Improved Root Development."

The right side of the bag is a deep forest green adorned with delicate, light-green line-art illustrations of leaves and branches. A large, clear, crescent-shaped window on this side reveals the actual fertilizer inside: small, uniform, spherical granules in shades of deep indigo and light blue.

At the bottom of the pouch are icons for "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" and a green checkmark indicating the product is "Ready to Use." The weight is listed as Net Wt. 10 oz (280 g). The overall image conveys a high-quality, specialized maintenance product for bonsai enthusiasts.

Mature Desert Rose with Massive Caudex in an Unglazed Yixing Pot

This is not something we typically carry, which is exactly why I bought it.

I picked up this Desert Rose in the fall of 2025 from a grower near Key West, Florida. At the time, it was growing in a typical plastic nursery pot. The plant itself had such a great base and so much character that I thought it deserved something better, so we moved it into an unglazed Yixing ceramic pot.

The first thing you notice is the caudex. It is huge, wide, and has that almost sculptural look that makes Desert Rose so interesting. Above that, the plant has multiple established trunks and a nice canopy of thick green leaves. It is a very unusual piece and definitely not something you are going to confuse with one of our normal bonsai listings.

I do not plan on turning Bonsai Outlet into a Desert Rose nursery, but every once in a while I come across something I simply cannot leave behind. This was one of those plants. I figured someone reading this listing might appreciate it as much as I did.

This is the exact plant shown in the photographs.

Why I Bought This One

  • Massive Caudex: The swollen base is easily the standout feature and gives the plant an incredible amount of visual weight.
  • Mature Structure: Multiple established trunks emerge directly from the caudex, giving it a naturally aged appearance.
  • Unusual Offering: Desert Rose is not something we normally carry, so this is a one-off piece.
  • Pot: We moved it from its nursery container into a 9.5" unglazed Yixing ceramic pot that suits the plant much better.

Plant Details

  • Common Name: Desert Rose
  • Height: Approximately 12" from table to apex
  • Spread: Approximately 10"
  • Pot: 9.5" unglazed Yixing ceramic pot
  • Origin: Purchased from a grower near Key West, Florida in fall 2025
  • Availability: One plant only

A Little About Desert Rose

Desert Rose is grown for its swollen trunk base, unusual form, and showy flowers. It likes warmth, strong light, and very good drainage. The caudex stores water, so this is not a plant that should sit constantly wet.

It is tropical and must be protected from freezing temperatures. In colder climates, it will need to come indoors for the winter and should be kept in a bright, warm location.

What to Expect

This is a living plant and it will continue to change with the season. Leaf density may increase or decrease depending on temperature, light, and shipping. Flowering is also seasonal, so the plant may or may not be in bloom when it arrives.

The caudex, trunk structure, and Yixing pot shown in the photographs are the exact plant you are purchasing.

Please Note

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
