Just look at the double twist on this tree. The thick trunk makes one strong turn near the base and then twists again before reaching the canopy. It is dramatic, unusual, and an absolute show-stopper from the moment you see it.

This Chinese Elm measures 12" from the table to the apex and has a 7" spread. It is planted in a 7" painted and glazed Yixing ceramic pot decorated with a traditional blue landscape scene. The white pot keeps the presentation clean, while the artwork adds a special finishing touch.

This tree was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, with a healthy canopy of small green leaves and new growth developing throughout the branches.

About This Tree

This is one of those trees where the photos really do the talking. The trunk rises from a rugged root base, twists sharply in one direction, and then makes a second turn beneath the canopy. The pale bark highlights every bend, while the darker area near the lower twist adds even more depth and character.

The upper trunk continues into a compact canopy with plenty of small leaves and branches to work with. As the tree settles in after repotting, the new growth can be allowed to extend before the canopy is trimmed into a tighter shape.

Even the pot helps this tree stand apart. Its painted blue landscape gives the planting a traditional Chinese feel and turns an already memorable bonsai into a complete display.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently being grown that way at our Florida nursery. You may continue growing it as a tropical, or you can gradually transition it to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms perform best when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Place it in very bright light and consider using a quality grow light if natural indoor light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust gradually as temperatures cool in fall. In colder climates, including New England, the dormant tree will still need appropriate protection for its pot and roots during winter.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Make sure excess water drains freely, and never allow the root ball to dry out completely.
• After Repotting: Let the tree settle in and continue growing before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect the double-twist trunk, canopy, roots, soil, and painted ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly shed leaves after being boxed and transported. The tree may arrive with fewer leaves than shown in the July 20 photographs, and additional leaves may drop as it adjusts to its new environment.

This is normal for Chinese Elms and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it proper light and water, avoid making immediate major changes, and allow it time to settle. It can begin pushing fresh growth once it becomes comfortable in its new home.
