A professional-looking, resealable stand-up pouch of Bonsai Thrive 180, a time-release fertilizer specifically formulated for the specialized needs of bonsai trees.

The packaging design is split vertically. The left side has a clean, textured white background featuring the product name "BONSAI THRIVE 180" in bold, black lettering beneath an orange circular logo of a stylized crane. Below the product name, several key horticultural benefits are listed: "Long-Lasting Nutrient Supply," "Low Risk of Over-Fertilization," "NPK 19-5-9 in Every Granule," and "Improved Root Development."

The right side of the bag is a deep forest green adorned with delicate, light-green line-art illustrations of leaves and branches. A large, clear, crescent-shaped window on this side reveals the actual fertilizer inside: small, uniform, spherical granules in shades of deep indigo and light blue.

At the bottom of the pouch are icons for "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" and a green checkmark indicating the product is "Ready to Use." The weight is listed as Net Wt. 10 oz (280 g). The overall image conveys a high-quality, specialized maintenance product for bonsai enthusiasts.

Tall Dwarf Jade & Informal Chinese Elm Pre-Bonsai Pair – Exact Trees Shown

This pair has two very different personalities.

The Dwarf Jade is tall, upright, and already carrying a substantial trunk with branches positioned from the lower trunk all the way to the top. The Chinese Elm is shorter and wider, with a low trunk line, good movement, and several branches already moving in different directions.

Both trees are still in 6" grow pots, so you are buying the raw material before somebody else makes all the decisions. You can continue growing them, begin refining the branch structure, or eventually move them into bonsai pots once you know where you want to take them.

This exact pair was photographed on August 7, 2026. What you see is what you will receive.

The Dwarf Jade

This Dwarf Jade was started from a cutting approximately five years ago. It has a strong upright trunk, plenty of established branches, and healthy extension growth throughout the tree.

At approximately 15" tall from the soil to the apex, this is the taller tree in the pair. There is enough growth to begin shaping now, but it could also stay in the grow pot for another season if your goal is to continue thickening selected branches.

Dwarf Jade is our number-one-selling bonsai species. It is forgiving, responds quickly to pruning, and gives you plenty of opportunities to make adjustments as the tree develops.

The Chinese Elm

This imported Chinese Elm is approximately 8" tall from the soil to the apex. It has a compact trunk with strong movement and several established branches that already give the tree a clear framework.

The right side stretches outward while the upper growth provides several options for building the future canopy. This is the kind of pre-bonsai where removing the wrong branch too early would be a mistake. I would study it for a while, decide which trunk line and branches you want to emphasize, and then begin simplifying it.

The Elm is currently being maintained as a tropical tree. You can continue growing it that way. If you live in a northern state, you may eventually want to transition it to a cold-hardy seasonal cycle, but that should be done gradually and at the appropriate time of year.

Why This Pair Works

The Jade gives you a taller, heavier tree with succulent foliage and quick regrowth. The Elm gives you a shorter, more traditional deciduous structure with finer leaves and a completely different pruning challenge.

These are two of the most popular bonsai species we sell, but neither tree feels generic. One is upright and substantial. The other is compact, low, and full of design choices.

Shipping Expectations

Chinese Elms are known for shedding foliage during shipping and while adjusting to a new environment. Some trees may lose only a few leaves, while others may drop quite a bit. This is normal for the species and does not automatically mean the tree is unhealthy.

Once the Elm settles into appropriate light and growing conditions, it should begin producing fresh foliage. The Dwarf Jade generally handles shipping well, although minor changes in foliage are always possible.

What you see is what you will receive.

Please Note

All trees are sold as-is. All sales are final - no refunds, returns, or exchanges. Once the tree leaves our nursery, care is your responsibility. Have questions? Just reach out - we're happy to help.

We ship thousands of bonsai trees and supplies each year, and every order is packed with care by our team. Live trees are watered, secured, and packaged to help them arrive safely and ready for their new home.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.

Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
