A Kotobuki Worth Keeping for Yourself
We grow Japanese Black Pine ‘Kotobuki’ at the nursery because its naturally short, compact needles make it such valuable material for bonsai. Many of our trees are used for grafting. Every once in a while, however, we find one with a graft union that looks so good and a structure with so much potential that we set it aside.
This was one of those trees.
It has been at our Massachusetts nursery for quite a while, waiting for us to style it. Like so many good projects around here, it remained in the queue while other trees demanded our attention. Rather than make it wait another season, we are offering it to someone who can finally give it the direction it deserves.
The appeal of Kotobuki becomes obvious when you see the foliage up close. The needles are noticeably shorter than those of a typical Japanese Black Pine, giving the tree a naturally tighter appearance and making it easier to create convincing proportions. This specimen already offers numerous branches and growing points throughout the upper structure, giving its next owner options when selecting a front, establishing primary branches and building a future crown.
The graft is visible, as expected on a grafted Kotobuki, but it has developed into a clean transition that does not overpower the trunk. That is exactly why we kept this particular tree. The lower trunk has gentle movement, the bark is beginning to develop character and the branching provides plenty of material for a thoughtful first design.
This is not a finished bonsai. It is healthy, vigorous pre-bonsai material for someone who enjoys making the important decisions themselves. You can style it on your own, bring it to a workshop or work with a professional to develop it. However you approach it, you are beginning with the compact foliage and strong growth that make Kotobuki such a desirable Japanese Black Pine cultivar.
