Tiger Bark Ficus Bonsai with Dramatic Aerial Roots
This is a really fun Tiger Bark Ficus with a lot of natural character.
The first thing you notice is the movement. The trunk comes out of the pot with a strong lean, then twists upward into a full green canopy. It does not look stiff or overly formal. It has that natural, tropical ficus feel that makes the tree interesting from several angles.
The aerial roots are what make this one special. Several roots drop down from the trunk and branches, wrapping around the lower trunk and reaching into the soil. They give the tree an older, more established look and add a lot of visual interest around the base. This is the kind of detail that makes Tiger Bark Ficus so enjoyable to work with over time.
The bark has nice texture throughout, with the pale speckling Tiger Bark Ficus are known for. The foliage is healthy, bright green, and already filling in nicely. With continued pruning and refinement, this tree has a lot of potential to become an even better tropical bonsai.
It is planted in a 10" unglazed Yixing ceramic pot with a soft brown tone and scalloped rim. The pot works well with the tree without taking attention away from the trunk, roots, and movement.
Why We Like This Tree

- The trunk movement: The tree has a strong lean and twist instead of a straight, predictable shape.
- The bark texture: Nice Tiger Bark Ficus speckling and rough texture throughout the trunk and branches.
- The canopy: Healthy green foliage with plenty of branching to continue developing.
- The pot: The unglazed Yixing pot has an earthy look that fits the tree well.

Care Notes
Tiger Bark Ficus is a tropical bonsai and should be protected from cold temperatures. In warmer climates, it can be grown outdoors in bright light. In colder areas, it should come inside for the winter and be kept near a bright window.
Water when the soil begins to dry slightly, but do not let the tree dry out completely. Ficus respond well to pruning and can be shaped and refined as they continue to grow. The aerial roots are part of the character of this tree, so take a little extra care around them when watering, moving, or repotting.
