Traditional Chinese Elm Bonsai with a Sculptural Exposed Root Base

This is the exact Chinese Elm bonsai tree you will receive.

The roots on this Chinese Elm are so cool. They lift the trunk above the soil and spread out like fingers, creating little openings and shadows beneath the base. From there, the trunk rises into a traditional curved shape and finishes in a full canopy of small green leaves.

The tree measures 10" from the table to the apex and has a 5" spread. It is planted in an 8.5" glazed Yixing ceramic pot with a wide oval shape and soft blue-green finish. The larger pot gives the roots plenty of room to shine and creates a nicely balanced presentation.

This Chinese Elm was recently repotted and is growing back nicely at our Florida nursery. It was photographed on July 20, 2026, with a full canopy and fresh lighter-green growth appearing among the established leaves.

About This Tree

This tree has a classic Chinese Elm silhouette, but the root base makes it anything but ordinary. Several heavy roots arch away from the trunk before disappearing into the soil. They give the tree a strong sense of age and make the lower portion just as interesting as the canopy.

The trunk has a natural bend that moves the canopy slightly to one side without making the tree feel off balance. Up top, the branching supports a rounded crown with plenty of small serrated leaves. Once the tree has fully settled after repotting, the new shoots can be trimmed to tighten the canopy and bring out more of the branch structure.

This would be a great choice for someone who wants a traditional-looking Chinese Elm with one very memorable feature.

Chinese Elm Care Notes

This Chinese Elm was imported as a tropical bonsai and is currently growing that way at our Florida nursery. It can continue to be grown as a tropical, or it can be gradually transitioned to cold-hardy outdoor care. We often find that Chinese Elms do best when they are allowed to follow the seasons and experience winter dormancy.

• Keeping It Tropical: Keep the tree warm and actively growing through winter. Give it very bright light, using a quality grow light if your indoor natural light is limited.
• Growing It Cold Hardy: Keep the tree outdoors and allow it to adjust naturally as temperatures cool in fall. In colder climates, including New England, the dormant tree will still need suitable protection for its pot and roots during winter.
• Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to approach dryness. Allow the excess water to drain, and do not let the root ball dry out completely.
• After Repotting: Give the tree time to settle in before doing major pruning, root work, or another repotting.

Shipping Confidence

This tree ships from our Florida nursery and will be carefully packed to protect its canopy, trunk, exposed roots, soil, and glazed ceramic pot during transit.

Please expect some foliage loss during shipping. Chinese Elms commonly drop leaves after being boxed and moved. Your tree may arrive with fewer leaves than shown in the July 20 photographs, and it may shed additional foliage while adjusting to its new surroundings.

This is normal for the species and does not necessarily mean the tree is unhealthy. Give it appropriate light, water it carefully, and allow it time to settle. Fresh foliage can begin appearing once the tree adjusts to its new home.
