Why Hawaiian Umbrella Is So Popular
- Beginner-friendly and forgiving
- Evergreen with glossy, dark green leaves
- Creates a natural “mini tree canopy” look—those leaves form little umbrellas
- Responds well to pruning, so you can build density and shape quickly
Quick Care (Simple + Effective)
- Light: Bright light is best. Sunny window, sunroom, or grow light = tighter growth and better structure.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top of the soil begins to dry. Don’t let it stay bone-dry for long periods, and don’t keep it constantly soaked.
- Temperature: Tropical. Protect from cold and drafts. Outdoors in summer is great; bring inside before nights get chilly.
- Pruning: Let it push growth, then prune back to build shape and density. It’s a great tree to learn pruning rhythm.
- Fertilizer: Feed during active growth to keep it vigorous and filling in.
The DIY “Build” Experience
Repot into ceramic, top dress for a finished look, add wire if you want to guide structure, and then watch it respond. This is the kind of bonsai you can actually improve week by week—and it stays good-looking the whole time.

Live bonsai trees generally ship early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, to reduce time in transit. Tools, pots, soil, fertilizer, and other non-living items usually ship throughout the week.
Bonsai Outlet is a licensed nursery, not just a warehouse. We follow the proper inspection and certification requirements for shipping live plants across state lines. When a state requires additional documentation, such as a nematode certificate or nursery inspection certificate, we work to ensure the proper requirements are met before shipping.
