A Miniature Forest in a Single Pot
The Kashima Dwarf Japanese Maple is one of the most beloved cultivars in the bonsai world, prized for its exceptionally small leaves, tight internodal spacing, and naturally compact growth habit — all traits that make it ideal for creating the illusion of a full-sized forest in miniature form. This specimen is presented in a classic multi-stem clump style (Kabudachi), with 4–5 upright trunks emerging from a shared base, creating a natural grove-like composition right out of the box.
Structure & Development
- Multi-Stem Base: Multiple trunks rise from a unified root base, each with its own character and movement — a naturally occurring composition that would take years to engineer artificially.
- Bud Activity: Dozens of healthy pink buds are visibly swelling across all stems, signaling a vigorous and well-established root system ready to push strong spring growth.
- Internodal Spacing: Even in dormancy, the tight node spacing characteristic of Kashima is clearly evident — this translates to a dense, refined canopy once in leaf.
- Pot & Soil: Planted in a wide, low oval terra cotta training pot with a perlite-rich, fast-draining bonsai mix — the ideal setup for a shallow-rooted clump-style composition.
What Makes Kashima Special
Unlike standard Japanese maples, Kashima produces exceptionally small, delicate leaves with fine lobing — often less than half the size of typical palmatum foliage. This makes it one of the few cultivars that achieves true visual scale in small and shohin-sized bonsai. Spring foliage emerges in soft chartreuse-green with light red margins, maturing to a clean mid-green in summer before turning golden-orange in fall.
