One-of-a-Kind European Olive
Pre-Bonsai We ran out of time to restyle and repot.
The European olive bonsai tree is a living sculptural masterpiece that captures the essence of ancient olive groves in miniature form. Cultivated from the olive species (Olea europaea) native to the Mediterranean region, this evergreen bonsai develops an impressively aged appearance over time.
As it matures, the gnarled, twisted trunk takes on rough, cracked bark with natural deadwood features, especially when grown from wild-collected specimens. The small gray-green oblong leaves call to mind the sun-drenched hills of Italy, Greece and Spain.
Among the most prized olive bonsai are the wild olive variety with incredibly tiny leaves and the Olea sylvestris with rounded, dark green foliage. Though petite, these trees are packed with character that develops over their long, slowly-growing lives potentially spanning hundreds of years.
Easy to care for, olive bonsai need full sun and excellent drainage, thriving in warm, dry conditions. While drought-tolerant once established, their feisty Mediterranean spirit shines through with simple care. Diminutive white flowers may even give way to striking black olives as the seasons change.
