The Brazilian Rain tree, or Pithecellobium torta, is an unusual tree that makes for an excellent bonsai.
Brazilian Rain trees have many interesting qualities. The leaves fold up at night and the bark exfoliates with age- revealing a creamy under-bark.
The trunk and branches will flatten and undulate, producing a muscular look. And they are strong, drought tolerant and vigorous. Overall an excellent choice for indoor bonsai, and beginners. These versatile bonsai can be grown inside, but prefer to be out for the summer (who wouldn’t?).
Be aware that each late winter/early spring they will drop leaves, but fear not they grow back almost immediately.
If you prune mindfully, you can develop a truly extraordinary tree.
This Brazilian Rain Tree is 26" tall, measured from the table to the top of tree. The spread is 14"
